Okay I downloaded a music video What I've Done by linkin park. One in HD (60mb) and one in regular (20mb). They are in the same format (.mkv). I watched both of them and the HD one was better, but it also takes up 3times the memory. Okay so is the 60mb true HD quality that people experience on tv just on a pc sceen tho. So, if I were to connect my pc to a HDtv, would experience HD video ?

So which video format is HD, can it only be like .mkv or others like .avi as well ?

  1. The defining qualities of HD video is not the video format or the file size.  The resolution is the most important factor.  The resolution of the video needs to be 1280x720 or 1920x1080.  If it is not, then it cannot be called HD video.

While HD video was originally MPEG-2, now a days, you can find it in WMV, MPEG-4, MOV.

If you were to output your computer to your HDTV, you would need to connect it via component, VGA, DVI or HDMI to get the high resolution signal.  If you use composite or s-video, it is technically not HD regardless of the source file.

  2. Neither the size of the file nor the file container have anything to do with HD.  A video is in HD if it is recorded in 1080i, 720p, or 1080p format. All file formats (wmv, avi, etc.) support HD videos.

If your PC graphics card supports any of the above resolutions (and most can easily do 1080i or 720p) then yes, your PC can display HD on your TV.
