I have been looking at HDD camcorders for a while, and would like opinions on which one to get.I dont want to spend A TON of money, I'm talking under $600. Im a little affraid of some things im hearing, the camera i really liked, Panasonic SDR-H40 HDD 40GB 42x zoom, seems to have some flaws i dont like. It has a max battery time of 50 minutes, and no available spare batteries, no viewfinder, bad indoor/lowlight shooting, with no external or built in light, and poor sofeware for video transfer and editing.

The main purpose that i want this camera is to make videos for youtube, and school projects, mostly indoor shooting, with some outside.

Thank you so much for all your help and opinions!

  1. I recommend Sony DCR-SR200 Digital Handycam 40GB HDD Camcorder..A decent deal for it is only $ 470.

  2. No camcorder comes with a good battery in the box with the camcorder. Buy an additional, optional, rechargeable battery.

No camcorder comes with good video editing software - they make camcorders - not video editing software. (Sony Vegas for Windows; iMovieHD or FinalCut Express for Macintosh are the low-end recomendations.)

No consumer camcorder does well in lowlight - they have small lenses do not allow lots of light to get to the imaging chips - and the imaging chips are small (bigger is better). These two items - big lenses and big imaging chips are expensive and help make the pro camcorders do well in low light. Your options are: Turn on the lights or use a video light.

  3. JVC Everio GZ-MG335 30GB Hard Drive Camcorder with 35x Optical Zoom

    Price : $399.99
