I heard that constantly formatting your hard disk will shorten your hard disk life, is that true? Why?

  1. well, in the first place so does sticking magnets to it, repeatedly throwing it against a brick wall and using it as a martini shaker. In other words, regardless of whether it would hurt it or not, why would someone constantly format a hard disk in the first place?

But to seriously answer your question, and assuming you meant a normal format (not a "quick" format that just wipes the partition table) The only reason I could see why it would shorten its life is because you're basically writing over the entire disk each time you format.
