  1. yes the HDDVD one will play HD and regular DVDs

the Blueray one will play all of them

  2. Yes they both play standard DVD's.  You also asked which is better...They both can show the same picture quality(1080p) but Bluray has 4 of the 6 major studios backing it while HDDVD only has 2 studios backing it.  I would hold out a little longer because HDDVD is almost an obsolete format.  After Warner Bros decided to put movies out only in Bluray, HDDVD pretty much died.  Don't be tricked by the cheap HDDVD players because in a couple more months nothing new will be coming out for them!

  3. Yes, they do.

  4. Well you obviously already have the answer to your first question, which is yes.

As for the second, to combine and add to what others have said... Quality wise they are for most perposes completely identical.  Surround Sound 1080p etc. However, Blue-Ray discs have a higher potential disc capacity, so in other words they can hold more video and as such are more future proof.  Also at the moment it looks like Blue-Ray is winning the war, as only a couple major studios are still using HD-DVD.  Plus Blue-Ray has the PS3 on it sides (the XBox 360 only plays HD-DVD with an additional attachment you need to buy that costs $180).

The only upside to HD-DVD is it has a combo format for some movies, that is a HD-DVD on one side and a regular DVD on the other.  As far as the durability against damage of both formats, Blue-Ray discs pretty much all have a special anti-scratch/smudge coating.. however they do so because without it Blue-Ray discs are far more damagable then HD-DVD.  If HD-DVD discs start coming out with a coating (which some might already, of this I'm still not certain) then those HD-DVD discs will technically be the more durable of the two disc types. Thought this shouldn't be a factor at all if you take care of your discs ;)

  5. yes
