We have setup a projector at our church and we want to plug our DVD player into the component on our ONKYO Receiver and play it out through our HDMI hookup to our projector. Is this possible?

  1. Sure. Most ONKYO receivers are both switching and transcoding, so you can change the signal from component to HDMI.

    Enjoy your DVD!

  2. More than likely you will need to switch your output settings.  It sounds like the receiver is capable.  You now just need to tell it what to do, not exactly plug and play stuff when messing with HDMI.  Good Luck!

  3. The Onkyo TX-SR505 is variously reported as only passing through HDMI or as transcodes video (able to get an HDMI video signal out from component in). You need it to transcode to do what you are trying to do. The fact you are not getting a signal suggests four possibilities.

    1) It doesn't transcode .... i.e. you are out of luck.

2a) It transcodes but there is a setting wrong on the receiver ... you may have to set up the input menu so that the component input you are using is active as an input for the HDMI output.

2b) The HDMI cable is faulty or too long for the quality of cable ... if it is longer than 12'-15' (4-5 m) it may be inadequate. HDMI can be problematic at distance.

2c) There may be an HDMI handshake issue .... some times HDMI doesn't get detected reliably and the signal is cut off.

BTW, if you can't get HDMI to work there is no good reason not to use component output to the projector ... most professional installers still use component in preference to HDMI simply because it is more reliable.

If you are using a non-upconverting DVD player you might as well use component. If it is an upconverting DVD player use HDMI in and hDMI out.

That all said. the only place component isn't going to work as well as HDMI is if you have a 1080p projector (and even then if the deinterlacer in the projector is any good it will upscale the 1080i component input to 1080p and you probably won't see any difference from a HDMI 1080p input).

  4. You can do that if you have a compatible receiver. What is your ONKYO receiver model ?
