  1. High Definition Media Interferface or HDMI is an all "Digital" video and audio signal traveling on one band, which is more suitable to high definition A/V sources than the 3 since it carries audio "digital" signal. Component is next best in line; also suitable for High definition sources (only video capatiable), but is all analog which compromises signal quality. Also displays the bandwith only up to 720 progressive scanning horizontal lines, which HDMI can go up to native 1080p. S video or "Super" video only carries standard digital signals (408i/p), and can work on analog signal as well. Composite, which carry the 2 colors portions along with the black and white info all on one signal--unlike S-video which carries the b/w info but carries the 2 color portions on another band--works for the standard digital interlace scan only.

  2. It somewhat depends on what you want to achieve. If the projector is 480p resolution you could use S-video. But if 720p or 1080p you need Component or, preferably, HDMI (or DVI -- the video only version) to get best results.

The order of preference is HDMI, Component, S-video and composite (in decreasing order of picture quality). HDMI is a digital signal that supports 1080p and up. Component is an analog connection that works great at up to 1080i and over long distances, BUT doesn't support HDCP (Which means it may not work for HD. See Wikipedia for details on HDCP). S-video is a form of component that won't handle more than 480p, while composite also handles 480, but gives a relatively low quality image.

HDMI can becomes problematic with budget cables at more than about 15 ft (4.5 m), so you need a good HDMI cable. See the information at the link. You will definitely get best results with the BJC Series 1,  but should be fine with any cable Blue Jeans sells that comes in a 10m (35' length). You can spend more, but I doubt it will work better. Note, if you plan to enclose the cable in a wall or ceiling you must use a suitably rated cable.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Although HDMI is best, I use component because a 20' HDMI cord was like $150 - $200 and the component was like $50 and I do receive HD signals from my DirectTV.
