HDMI cable connected but cant hear sound?

I connected an HDMI cable from the box of a Panasonic Home Theather to my TV but i cant hear the sound of the TV through my home theather. I can only hear it when I play a movie on the Home theater. Whats the problem?

  1. HDMI is not bidirectional. On the TV it is used as INPUT not output.

    If you want to hear the TV via the home theater connect the digital audio out of the TV to the digital audio input (if available) of your home theater.


  2. on the tv, the HDMI is hooked up as an input so you only get sound from your home theater if something is plugged into it as an input.  u need to connect an optical toslink from your tv's audio output to ur reciever's input.  if ur tv doesnt have an optical port, u can use coaxial audio output (if it has it) or rca/phono output (red and white connectors).  if ur tv is old, it may not have any audio outputs.
