  1. HDMI - High Definition Multi Interface is a cable that carries HD video and audio signals through a single cable vs. RCA or compenent cables.  Unless you have a defetive cable plug ( at either end ) or a defective output plug from your video source or a defective input from your TV, you may have something wrong internally with you output source.  Some multi disk players do not have the internal wiring configured correctlty.  HDMI technology is still progressing but only a few single disk players have advanced enough to provide the HD image and sound that lives up to expectations. Sony and Panisonic now have there next generation in the market as they've cured the boot up time problem.

Upconverting simply means taking a regular DVD format and artificially increasing resolution beyond 780p ( lines of transfer on a screen.  True HD is 1080i and 1080p which is the maximum resolution that can be obtained and is only avaliable through Blue Ray which is recorded in this resolution. You may have a conflict between your player's unpconverting ability.

  2. Hmm....you must have some of your settings incorrect. However, if you're only watching Standard definition on the tv...no matter what cable you use, it won't look great. Make sure you have HD service from your cable/satellite provider to take full advantage of your HDTV.

  3. Here is my guess, the component output of the sony bravia is 480p only therefore it is not upconverting your signal, the aquos must be doing a better job of upscaling from 480p to its native resolution. while the hdmi output is upconverting the signal inducing noise which then the aquos is amplfing. in the short check your dynamic contrast settings, also match your native resolution of your screen meaning if your aquos is an older 720p panel or a newer 1080p, match the upconverting format to that so that the panel is not scaling in addition of the upconvertor. The cable could matter depending on the distance if its a short run then it doesnt thats the upside of digital, 1' and 0' is either there or is not, so you dont have to worry about buying the best cable unless your run is really long, typically is you see your signal then the cable is probably good enough.

  4. Are you using the right connector cords? They make all the difference. The right cords to use are expensive--like a hundred bucks, they are thick wires with a woven cloth covering. Check this out.
