Question:

HDMI cables - What's the deal?

I just bought my first LCD tv - a Samsung 46" LCD 1080p HD tv. I have an Xbox 360 (the halo version, so I believe that has the HDMI switch...I've never really looked), and a standard DVD player. No surround sound yet for my home theatre.

What would I want to get HDMI cables for? For my tv? For a Blue ray dvd player if I purchased one in the future? I really don't understand a whole lot about this stuff. I know it's important for 1080p.

Thanks for the help.

  1. It displays better picture and sound quality than component cables.

  2. HDMI is the only way to transmit digital video, and is therefor recommended. Component (NOT composite) is almost as good with the green, blue, and red connectors. Since you don't have an AV sound system yet you don't have to worry about sound other than the red and white stereo sound cables you might need with component video.

Once you get a decent sound system you'll have to take sound into account too.

HDMI will do digital 1080p. Component will do analog 1080p or i. Composite will only do 480p at best.

  3. hdmi is the only way that you can get 1080p.  bluray requires an hdmi.   xbox wont output 1080p so the best you can probably get is component (red, green, blue) but that is still 1080i.  dont be fooled by monster hdmi and other cable.  all cables are relativly the same.  hdmi length makes a difference.  under 15 ft and you are ok.

  4. Any HD source should be connected to your tv with HDMI v1.3 including HD cable/satellite receiver, XBOX 360, or an dvd hd player(like bluray) or dvd upconverter.

  5. If you get a Blu ray then use the HDMI cable for that.

If you want your 360 to be HD use Composite Cables.

use composite cables for the cable box too.

    WHY?

Cable wont put out in 1080P

Video games are video games and composite is good enough for them

and any way i have compared HDMI and composite cables.......VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE...And HDMI is more $$$
