Question:

HDMI from DVD to TV not working?

I have a Philips DVP5960 and Samsung LE37R87BDX television, both are new. SCART from DVD Player to TV works fine. HDMI does not wok at all. On both devices, the HDMI setting in the config menus re grayed out, which suggests each does not think HDMI signals are present.

(1) Is there a max length of HDMI cables? I am trying a 3m one but do not have a shorter one to try.

(2) Is there only one type of HDMI, or is it possible that I'm using incompatible versions or something?

thx

  1. It sounds like the HDMI cable may not be successfully passing the "handshake" step .... whereby the components check that each end of the connection is valid.

Different versions of HDMI exist, but the handshake is a requirement of all versions of the standard, and the cables themselves didn't really change. The requirements for what the cable must support changed, making some cables unable to pass higher version requirements, but at up to 4-5m this should not be an issue for any well built HDMI cable.

It's possible you have a faulty cable. 3m isn't very long (1-2m is "normal", but even 5m is only medium distance), but inexpensive cables fail at shorter distances than better cables, and that may be the case here.

I suggest trying another cable. Buy one locally, with agreement that you can return it if it doesn't solve the problem. Don't waste money on Monster though ... highly overpriced.

  2. are you connecting the scart and HDMI at the same time ? not that this would be a problem but with electronics everything is possible try disconnecting the scart, connecting the HDMI and turning on the tv and dvd or you could try with another HDMI cable since the HDMI input option would be gray out if no device is connected to this input.

  3. High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a licensable compact audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams. It represents the DRM alternative to consumer analog standards such as RF (coaxial cable), composite video, S-Video, SCART, component video and VGA, and digital standards such as DVI (DVI-D and DVI-I).

Check the version what your using. There are different version

    #  Versions

       2 HDMI 1.1

       3 HDMI 1.2

       4 HDMI 1.2a

       5 HDMI 1.3

       6 HDMI 1.3a

       7 HDMI 1.3b
