Ok, im planning to purchase a home theater, but im rather confused with the setup. I cant afford to buy an amplifier, so i prefer to purchase home theater with 5.1 surround. Now both TV and PS3 have optical out, but the home theater have only 1 optical in. I'm planning to purchase an HD satellite receiver with HDMI as well. So i was planning to connect HDMI from PS3 and reciever to the TV, then optical audio out from TV to home theater. Will I still get the 5.1 surrond for all the devices? Also, will I lose any kind of sound quality?

Thanks for the input

  1. You will, however, it will not work to it's optimal potential and you will lose sound quality.  If you buy a home theater boxed solution, it should have an HDMI input.  From your HT box, then run HDMI to the TV.

The main reason for this is kinda difficult to understand.

Some Blu-Ray movies include awesome sound tracks encoded in PCM, Dolby True HD, and DTS Master.  The PCM is uncompressed audio.  Pretty much the files the score was written in.  These high end sounds will only work through HDMI.  If you go through the TV first, you will lose a bunch.  Games will work ok, but the sound should be much richer through HDMI direct to the receiver.

I am about to re-do my home theater, I plan on spending $10,000.  Obviously, I cannot deal with losing any sound or video quality.

I am not a complete audiophile, for the most part, it is a fruitless persuit.  I would suggest asking yourself, what can I live with,  Set your budget.  Be happy.....

  2. Why do it half a**ed? You have a good TV and one of the best Blu-ray players around, and you're going to run all that to a HTIB? Get a real receiver and run HDMI for everything you can.

  3. Don't buy Home theater with DVD ( amp build - in ) , you should buy the one with receiver and speakers because it has more than one optical input on it. That a best connection , HDMI from PS3 to TV and optical cable from PS3 to receiver. It will give you the true 5.1 sound sound, don't connect optical from TV to receiver.
