  1. That doesn't seem like a bad set, but in the specifications I can't seem to find if it does DVD upscaling or not.

    So here's basically your setup:

    1) You have an SDTV.  You can use either composite (whatever i) or component (whatever p) [I'm not sure what region India is, if it's under PAL or NTSC].  Component would probably be better in this scenario.

    2) You have an HDTV.  If this thing upscales DVDs, component would be better, since component can carry up to 1080p signals [some devices, however, lock component to 1080i or something lesser, to get you to use HDMI which requires HDCP].  Most upscaling dvd players only go to 720p or 1080i though, so it wouldn't really matter.

If it does not upscale, either component or composite would work, as your TV will upscale to 720p or 1080p (depending on your TV's native resolution) and then de-interlace.  There'd really only be a difference if your TV does really bad de-interlacing, then you'd want component.

So overall, component won't be bad, it'd be better than SCART or composite.  There's no definite need for you to have HDMI, since this is the receiver, and is sending the audio to the speakers from there.  If this was a standalone DVD player you'd want HDMI to go to the receiver.

Upscaling DVD players are quite nice, and so if you can find a decent one you can survive without Bluray until the prices drop.

  2. You do not need HDMI to play a normal DVD.  I would recommend you get a DVD player with one though.  It ALOT cleaner with the single cable.  I bought one at CircuitCity for like $30 w/ a HDMI cable output..

  3. The only proof that a HDMI cable is better is when using HD DVD or BluRay otherwise composite component cables of high quality do the trick. One benefit to HDMI is simplicity of 1 cable and connection vs. component cables.

  4. HDMI is used to transmit HD or Blu-Ray to a High Def TV.  For normal DVD's a Component Cable setup will be just fine.

  5. no, you only need a hdmi for hi-def

also you get a better colour contrast with a scart connection rather than a component one

    :)
