Question:

HDMI to COMPONENT and OPTICAL audio ?

Currently all my equipment is connected to a RECEIVER and from there I transmit the VIDEO/AUDIO signals to the TV and the SURROUND. My RECEIVER can only handle COMPONENT and COMPOSITE video, and OPTICAL and COAXIAL digital audio.

I want to connect a PS3, but I have only two options: A direct HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and a toslink for the digital audio to the RECEIVER

or.....

A PS3 HDMI to component cable that I can conect to RECEIVER. The problem is that SONY only makes one that includes regular analog audio plugs. For this, I will have to leave the L/R plugs out and conect an additional Toslink for digital audio.

I see that monster have a cable that has component AND toslink, but is too expensive.

Any other alternative you might have?

  1. I agree with TV GUY's suggestion, but you may want to eventually considering upgrading to a receiver with HDMI inputs.  Some of the higher end Blu-Ray audio (DTS Master Audio, etc.) will only pass through HDMI and not optical/toslink.

  2. Here is the best solution:

    PS3 to TV via HDMI

    PS3 optical to AV receiver.

You get the best video and multi-channel audio.
