My tv does not have a HDMI port and I want to upscale dvd's from my ps3 or blu-ray player. Can I use one of these $100 HDMI to Component converters so I get the upscale signal and go around the MAN who won't let me upscale without HDMI?

  1. HDMI is actually no better than component. Just use component input. It accommodates any format of signal including High Definition.

Read the HDMI history part of the following website, an inside investigation of HDMI.

  2. You obviously think that HDMI and upscaling will create a new magic picture you can't possibly miss!!

Well, I have some news for you.

    a) If your TV has DVI, use an HDMI to DVI converter and you are all set

    b) If your TV has no DVI and no HDMI, then it must have component (otherwise it is not an HDTV)

Use component and your TV will upscale itself the input.

Instead of buying stupid converters, spend the money to buy a real HD Player (HD DVD or blu ray)

  3. I understand your issue: it's that many commercial DVDs are protected against high-def playback through component and all you can get is 480p out of the player. If your TV is native 1080i, though, it's already doing the upconversion from 480p to its native format. Yes, you can get a converter if you prefer to have your player do the upconversion. I've never seen one for as little as $100. At that price, it's worth a try to see whether the picture looks better with the player doing the upconversion. (PS, where did you find a converter for only $100? I might want to try it, too.)
