Question:

HDMI video signals cuts out at times.?

I recently purchased a new HDTV (Sony Bravia KDL52XBR5). My digital cable box has DVI output and the TV accepts HDMI input. I purchased a DVI-to-HDMI cable which provides the video signal and am using composite audio. Everything works fine except every so often, the video signal cuts out. I have waited for just over 10 minutes for the problem to correct itself, but it does not. Simply turning the TV off then on again fixes the issue. I have also watched movies and played video games via component video and the problem does not exist using these cables. I have turned off all power management features to try and isolate the issue. Does this sound like an issue with the cable, or the TV? What do you recommend?

Thanks.

  1. Don't forget that it could be a problem with the cable box as well.  Call the cable company and ask them to send you (upgrade you) a unit with HDMI.  If it only has DVI it is quite old and it may have some s/w issues.

In the mean time, use component. I doubt you can see the difference.

  2. Did you get one of those OVERSIZED cables? Or the lightweight ones?  HDMI prefers the lightweight ones...

And I have had some minor problems with HDMI video doing exactly what yours has done...even with lightweight cables.

And it seems to mis-behave for a while...then it goes away, for weeks or months.

Certainly makes me wonder if it's related to the cable box weekly upgrades that get downloaded overnight...

And why in the heck do they have to do upgrades...did they get it wrong each and every time? Or is it to keep their jobs?
