There isn't much differance. There about the same quality. Component is better for 1080i & the HDMI is better for 1080p

HDMI also has video and audio in one cable. Component has 5 cords.

Or 720i/p , 480i/p

Depends on your tv. If your Tv supports up to 1080p then only the hdmi cable can be used. But if your tv is only 1080i or 720p there's hardly any difference at all.

Component cables will carry a high def video signal up to 1080i resolution.  HDMI cables can carry a high def video signal up to 1080p and also an audio signal.  With component you would need to add an extra cable or cables to carry the audio signal.

No not really, unless you have a 1080p HDTV with an HD DVD player or Blu-Ray Disc player.  Component Video can do up to 1080i if supported by your HDTV and source component.

- need to beware of comparability issue, hdmi version 1.2, 1.3, 1.3a....... and # of pins

Component:

- best at 1080i (hardly can see the diff comparing 1080p)

- total of 5 cables (with audio)

- lower cost for a similar audio/video quality to HDMI

- most tv/player has it

There is a big difference between hdmi and componet. hdmi is better it is digital has a larger bandwidth and it is easy to set up and it also transports digital audio and is faster then componet so faster refresh rate and less blur.

You'll probably want both.  Your tv only has one HDMI input, its better to use that for your dvd player, blue ray.  and use the component for tv.
