Question:

HDTV Antenna or Conversion Box?

Hi, hope someone can answer my question. So confused now. I just moved so now I don't have an antenna, nor do I have any cable/satellite service with my old analog tv. I'd like to make sure the tv still works after Feb 09. Do I need a hdtv antenna, or a conversion box, or both?

Would this antenna work without a conversion box?

Thanks a lot.

  1. You will need a converter box and a good quality, properly installed TV antenna.

The converter box becomes the digital tuner.  It's the part that will receive the digital signal and convert it so that you can view it on your analog set.  You can apply for no more than two $40 discount coupons at http://www.dtv2009.com .

Manufacturers are slapping HDTV on antennas and confusing people.  Ignore that part, it's marketing hype.  There is no such thing as an HDTV antenna.  The same old antennas we have been using for 50 years will still work.  Visit http://www.antennaweb.org , put in your ZIP code and you will get a list of the stations in your area that you could expect to receive, suggestions on antenna types for your unique situation and where to aim them.  I would avoid the amplified antennas, many times they actually limit the number of channels you receive.  Just get a good quality VHF/UHF antenna.

I hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.

  2. Since you have a analog television, you will need to purchase a converter box as well as a HDTV antenna.  If you don't get the converter box then your television will not work after Feb. 2009.  You can get two $40 debit cards from the government to purchase a converter box.  Converter box cost around $60.00 at any retail electronic store.

Any indoor or outdoor HDTV antenna is preferrable.  If you want a indoor antenna I recommended getting one that plugs into a electrical outlet.  This antenna gets more power and provides better reception that those antennas that doesn't have any electrical power just like the rabbit ears.

However if you plan on subscribing to satellite or cable services than you will not need to purchase a converter box.  Of course you will be paying a monthly fee for cable or satellite services.  The converter box is required only for those that receive their local channels through their indoor or outdoor antenna.
