Question:

HDTV and cable box issues?

I have an HD TV that worked fine a few weeks ago between my cable box and TV, that now doesn't. I have one coaxial cable jack that goes to my cable box, then HD cables and audio cables that go from my cable box to the TV. I do NOT have a coaxial cable from the 'out' of the cable box to the 'in' on the TV. Do I need this (the manual says I do, but again, it has worked in HD in the past w/o it)? I can't see why it would work last, and now not. In the meantime however, my cable company went from analog to all digital, I don't know if that makes a difference. The manual for my TV can be found at...

  1. Having the cable company as either analog or digital makes no difference to you. The cable box does any necessary conversion if you have the correct cable box. Since a cable box can be EITHER analog or digital, you should have had the correct one before they switched. Did it work after the switch?

I would suspect they were sending out both analog and digital for a long time before they went all digital. They may also be still sending out analog and not telling anyone. I have seen some companies say they were digital when they were only digital at some points. After that point, they converted to analog.

Not even all the employees know that because they don't even understand the difference. They only understand that digital is supposedly better so that must be what they have.

Will any other TV work when connected to that cable box? How are other TV sets that you have hooked up?

As you said, if you needed the cable from the box's "F" connector out going to your set, it would not have ever worked without it. The fact that it did until a few weeks ago says you don't need it.

You do need some kind of cable from the box to the TV. You only need one kind of connection, i.e. cable, but that might take multiple wires. You EITHER need one HDMI, or three component plus two audio,  or one S video plus two audio, or  one composite plus two audio, or one coax with type "F" connectors.

I listed the above in decreasing order of quality. I have seen hookups with more than one of the above cables. That was done by someone who really didn't know enough about their job to do it correctly.

Hook the cables coming out of the box to another TV. Does that work? Remove the cables coming out of the cable box and plug them into a DVD player. Does that work?
