HDTV do i have to connect?

I have digital cable and just Bought an HDTV do I need to call my cable co. or do i need to call someone else any help will help--or is it automatic

No, sorry. Without a HD box you will not get any HD channels. I hope you are not confusing HD with Digital TV. If you are asking about DTV you can get them w/o a stb (set top box) as long as you have a digital TV, or digital tuner. If you only have analog TVs there are several ways to get both DTV and HD TV. They are get a HD stb (only way to get HD), or get a digital converter. Right now Verizon is offering the digital converters to FIOS customers for free or you can go to dtv.gov and request the $40 coupon and go to a retail store (wal-mart, kmart, target etc) and get the converter.

The only thing I don't know is what channels the digital stations are broadcasting on. For that you would have to look in your local TV guide, sorry, I am from RI.

Not sure about cable,

but when I bought a full HDTV and I was a sky plus box customer I had to buy a sky HD compatible box and subscribe to the service as well,

so Id be surprised if you could do any less to get HD on cable!
