Question:

HDTV programming?

im using a TV, LG's model 42LB5D. It is a 1080p model with multiple HDMI inputs (I already run my PS3 via HDMI and it looks great). I have a cablebox from comcast (I live in the San Francisco Bay Area) that allows me to select and view the HD channels. The box and TV are connected via a component cable (3 video + 2 audio). The box does not have a HDMI slot.

The HD channels look no different than the non-HD channels... Not at all...

Also, the HD channels are cut off on both lateral ends... for example, I only see a very small part of CBS' logo on the bottom right of the screen. Especially when I see commercials, I know for sure that a lot of the screen is being cut off. I have attempted to change the layout, but none of the settings resolve the problem.

What do you think?

Thank you for your help!

  1. Are you using an HD cable box? In order to view proper HD you usually need to get an HD cable box. Try to get one with an HDMI output, but must will only have DVI which is still ok, just get a DVI to HDMI cable and a good set of component audio cables as DVI does not do audio only data. From my experience all that should solve your problems. If it doesn't call your cable company.

  2. From what you have said, i believe your set is tuned into a standard channel (channel 4-0) instead of 4-1 as an example.  Another possibility is your TV setup is not set in the HD in the 1080i position for your componet cable input.  Each manufacture had a different name for "Normal" in the setup.  Review your TV setup controls for each of your inputs.

    Good luck

  3. Couldn't have put it better myself

    Fa sho!

For additional HD programing stay tuned. Comcast is suing the FCC. LOL

  4. Be sure that you box is set to output a resolution supported by you tv.  Make sure you're tuned to an HD channel.  If the hd channels are cut off, check to be sure you tv is set to display hd picture in 16:9 (without the black sidebars), and if you have a "zoom" or a pic size button, trying using it to zoom out.

The worse-case scenario is that your tv may be overscanning (outputting the picture too wide for the screen.)  If you can't solve the problem any other way, this can usually be fixed through the service menu.  Only access the service menu with the help of a service manual or someone who is familiar with the menu process, because this menu actually tweaks the guts of your tv, and an incorrect setting change MIGHT permanently mess up the tv.

    *To access the menu:

    1) Hold down the Menu button on the remote till a password screen shows

    2) Keep holding the button, now press and hold the menu button on the TV and the service menu will eventually display.

This menu seems to change from a full version to an abbreviated version every other time you do the above procedure.

(I was able to fix this same problem on my tv using the service menu...but I was lucky.  I didn't know what I was doing, but I was able to "wing it", and didn't brick my tv.)
