  1. As others have said, the measure of a TV is diagonal from corner to corner.

Here's the fun part. LCDs and Plasmas usually measure that as viewable picture, Cathode Ray tubes... CRT "Boob Tubes" measure the size of the tube. So you could loose up to an inch or two in viewable area.

There is another thing to take into account... the aspect ratio of the screen... is it an older 4:3 (old) or newer 16:9 (more rectangular) screen?

16:9 screens are smaller in area than 4:3 screens of the same diagonal measure.

Also lets say you have a newer 16:9 screen and you view a program that is 4:3, to get the equivalent 19" size picture, you'll need about a 25" 16:9 screen.

  2. 19" HD ready tv sounds like a computer monitor to me. but it is the viewing size.

what you would want for a HD-ready tv is not the size, but the display resolution and aspect ratio. look for the numbers "720p" and "16:9". if that tv has the ability to display at least 720 vertical lines in a widescreen ratio of 16:9, it's indeed HD-ready. the bigger HDTV's can have as many as 1080 vertical lines.

also note that HDTV's either have YPbPr (component video out) or HDMI ports. if it ONLY has the red, yellow, and white composite wire ports... it's not an HDTV.

  3. The size of screens on TVs and monitors is the actual viewing area measured diagonally from one lower corner to an opposite top corner.

Here's a rule of thumb to ballpark the size of an HDTV.  Measure the distance from the screen to the viewer in feet.  Multiply by 4.  That's the approximate suggested size of the display.

So for a 14 ft viewing distance, one would need a minimum of a 48" HDTV.

    I hope this helps.

  4. It's a 19" screen measured diagonally from the lower left corner to the upper right corner. Manufacturers also round up, so it may only be an 18.5" diagonal sized screen.

Additional Details: The  Mikomi LCDW19HD TV has a 16:9 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1440 x 900. The actual viewing size is 48 cm (just shy of 19" measured diagonally). Here is some more info: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/pa...

  5. Its a 19" viewing size.
