  1. Stop!

Use an HDMI cable. If you don't then you are wasting your time with that TV. Believe me, you are missing out on the fun if you use a standard cable.

You can buy them from Goodwill for mayne $3 if you get lucky, becuase most are around $50.

If you have a friend who works at an electronics store, ask him to buy one with his employee discount.

  2. Watching SD content on an HDTV will not impact the lifetime of your TV in the slightest.  If you're ok with SD content, you're fine.  If you want HD content, you'll need an HD cable box, and will likely want to connect it to the TV with an HDMI cable.

Do NOT EVER buy an HDMI cable in a store.  They're a huge ripoff.  Buy your HDMI cables from Monoprice.com.  I have no affiliation with them, other than being a very happy customer.  They've got 6' HDMI 1.3a cables (the latest & greatest spec) for as little as $3.  Every bit as good as the $100 Monster cables at that same length.

  3. It won't do any damage. All that will happen is what is happening now. Standard cable in most cable systems does not offer high definition picture quality.

  4. It all boils down to the Cable Box and the Cables you use.

Have you told you cable company, that you now have a HD TV?

They will give you the  right box, and a supply of cables. They will also set it up for you, for a fee.

Also, on cable, not all channels are HDTV, they ones they show, are on special channels. Again, check out with your cable company, what channels, they are shown on.

And the cables are important, get the best you can, as in the HDMI ones, which needs a special cable box.

I bought my flat screen last year and set it up myself, but I have to tell you, it's one tough set up. They are way more complicated than our old ones. So if you can afford it, let the cable guy set it up.

Took me a nearly a week, to get it all set up right. With DVD player etc.

  5. No it wont mess it up faster. Watching standard cable on an HDTV will make it look grainy and blurry because it is not in high definitions. The bigger the tv, the blurrier it will look. If you want a clear HD picture you will need to get digital cable with HD or a sattelite with HD channels.
