  1. i paid 550 when my dog was treated.

  2. Depends on the vet

  3. TAKE the dog to the vet and find out

  4. I don't know but get him to the vet asap.  Ask if a payment plan can be worked out if it is to expensive.  This is very dangerous for a dog and if left untreated is deadly.  Also call your local HSPCA to see if they can help you I think they can and it wont be as expensive as the vet.

  5. First, your dog needs to be tested.  The test at my clinic costs $22.50 plus a $20 office visit fee.

If your dog tests positive - then treatment is necessary.  Our treatment costs $600 for everything including all medications and all tests in the future.

If your dog has been on heartworm preventative consistantly (like Heartgard) your dog is covered by their guarantee.  If you purchased it directly from a vet clinic - then Heartgard will pay for your dogs treatment.  If you purchased it from an online store (Foster & Smith or 1800PetMeds) then they typically have their own guarantee on the product.

If treatment is absolutely unaffordable and the dog isnt' showing major signs of problems (coughing, etc.) then there is an alternative - but, treatment in a vet clinic is best and a much better route.  If not possible though - you can purchase heartgard.  It is the ONLY safe product that can be given to a heartworm positive dog.  You can give it every two weeks for 1 year.

Typically after a year, the dog will test negative again.  It works by killing off all of the microfilaria (baby heartworms that eventually turn into mature heartworm) and then eventually the female heartworm dies.  It should continue to be on monthly preventative for the rest of its life.  Again though, that is a last resort treatment and is not as effective - but I have seen it work.

    Best wishes!

  6. any where from 100-600 dollors o get it removed...

  7. Depends on the vet and how serious it is.

    Call them and ask.

  8. talk to the vet there are some pills he can give the dog  every month

  9. Kari's answer is right on the money... Depending on how advanced the worms are, treatment may get very expensive or take a very long time (up to 3-4 months).

Whatever you do... don't buy Heartgard or another heartworm preventive hoping that it kills adult worms. It does not. If your dog's case can be treated, ask how soon you can start a preventive and then make sure to use it every month.

On a side note - if your dog has heartworms, it's entirely possible that it has other worm infections (intestinal) as well. You may need to get those treated too... some heartworm preventives also help prevent intestinal worms too.
