HEEELP..... landlord wont help me out?

Question

My boyfriend and I are trying to rent an apartment

They called and asked for a reference for where I currently live....... i've been living with my mother but paying rent......and my current landlord wont be my reference because i'm not on the lease........what do i do now? my landlord won't even talk to the people i'm trying to rent from........

Your landlord cannot help you if you are not on the lease, that is just the way it is.

I was in a similar situation (I didn't have a boyfriend at the time, I was alone) and here is what I did:

My mother cosigned my lease.  When the time came to renew the lease I had already been paying my rent on time for a year so my landlord was willing to take my mother off as the cosigner.  If I had been moving she still would have been able to give me a reference since it was my name on the lease.  

That is what I would do, though.  Ask your mother if she would be willing to cosign.

Ask the people you are trying to rent from if a Guarantor on the lease would satisfy them   That is someone, such as your mom, who would promises to pay the rent if you fail to do so.

You are asking him to commit fraud.   He can't give you a reference, you have no lease with him.

You do have a situation there. Unfortunately, without you being on the lease, a landlord cannot give reference to anyone beyond anyone that is one lease even if you paid the rent.  That is like doing someone's else homework, putting their name on it, and then expecting your own separate grade when the name on the paper clearly identifies who did the work.
