Basically, Republicans want a smaller federal government that spends less.  Democrats want a larger federal government that spends more.  Historically, the Republicans have been the financially responsible penny pinchers.  But the they have thrown this out the window since the Reagan administration.  When Reagan took office the national debt stood at less than $1 trillion.  Coming to the end of Bush's administration our national debt stands at $9.5 trillion.  Since 1980 (28 years) we find ourselves $8.5 trillion deeper in debt.
