  1. The waters below are the oceans, lakes, streams, etc.

The waters above refers to rain.

    Does that help?

You did not mention which translation you are reading.  There are many translations that have good annotations.  There are many commentaries.  Two authors you might try are the following" Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan wrote several comprehensive books of commentaries.  Rabbi Joseph Telushkin has written many books about the Bible and other Jewish topics, using a style which is engaging and easy to understand.

    It is great reading!  Enjoy!

  2. The Hebrew translated "firmament" actually means an expanse or open area. Note that God called the expanse heavens; not the Heavens beyond earth where there are stars, but the sky where birds are said to fly.

So there were waters above the heavens (as someone already said a water canopy) and waters below the heavens.

2 Peter 3:5-6 in the New Testament says that by the waters above the Earth was deluged.

  3. water canopy

  4. Come on now how lazy can you be the Hebrew in on the internet in english... And with a couple of key strokes it will be right in front of you........................................
