  1. Cancel the bid.

  2. You have to go and pick it up if you win, you are in a legal contract. sorry

  3. Email the seller as some sellers allow you to cancel the deal.

  4. Cancel the bid or retract the bid.

If it is too late to do that, you can email the seller and ask them to cancel your bid - which they can do from their end.

If that doesn't work, and you end up being the winning bidder, again explain to the seller.  The seller will file a non-paying bidder report - and select "We've agreed not to complete the transaction".  With this option, the buyer does not receive an Unpaid Item strike, the seller receives a Final Value Fee credit, and the item is eligible for a relist credit.   You just have to later log in and agree that you are not going to complete the transaction (which is why communication with the seller is important).

It's annoying to sellers when buyers want to back out of the buying process, and some might not be happy about it.  They might instead insist that they want to complete the transaction.  So, if you refuse to pay, the worst that will happen is you'll get an Unpaid Item Strike.  (And the seller will also get a refund on the final value fees, plus be able to relist the item and get a credit for it).

What are the consequences of having an unpaid item strike?  Ebay says "If a buyer gets too many strikes in too short a time period, their account will be suspended indefinitely. In some cases, limits may be placed on the buyer’s account in advance of suspension.".

Mistakes happen, and one unpaid strike will not really affect you at all.  But you can expect that that seller may block you from bidding on their items in the future.

(my answer won't be popular with eBay sellers).
