  1. If you do not understand the registry or.reg files, don't mess with them. You could trash your PC and have to re-install windows.

Yes if you merge a .reg file (Registry settings), you can introduce a security risk.  Most computers have the default action associated with .reg files to be "Merge", which means if you double click on them they will modify your registry.  On my XP systems I change this default action to "Edit" so I don't accidentally import registry settings (Vista will ask you to pass a UAC prompt to modify the registry).

    If you want to not merge the file, just delete it.  If you want to merge it but be able to undo it, the best thing is to right click on the file, select Edit, see what keys it is modifying, then open RegEdit, look at the current values for those keys, adjust the file so it reflects those changes and save it with a new filename ending in .reg.  Then if you merge the original file and want to undo it, you simply merge the file you created to change the settings back.   If you are not comfortable with editing the Registry or modifying text files, you should not undertake any of this - just delete the file.
