I'm new to golf. I'm just now getting down my swing and have played only once on a real course. The question I have is how do you know when to choose the right Iron for the Right distance to the Green? If I'm 100yds from the green, do I use a 9 Iron? Or a 7 Iron? How do I know which is the best Iron for the Job?

  1. The easiest way to figure this out is to spend several sessions at a driving range that has several yardage markers. By practicing with markers, you'll soon learn YOUR yardages, as some players would hit a lob wegde from 100 yards, but some would hit an 8 iron. There's unfortunately, not a generic formula for what works. What works good for me, may not great work for you. That's the fun in learning to play the game. Golf is not a sprint....it's a journey. Good luck!

  2. It's different for everybody.  Bring your full set to the driving range which has an accurate yardage marker.  Then swing each club and note the distance.  You have to note the carry, means the distance when the ball lands.  Do not note the total yardage, with roll because balls tend to roll more on flat ground on the range.

Also the yardage difference between irons should be around 10 yards.   If you have 110 yards with 9 iron, your 8 iron should be 120 yards.

  3. practice, you'll learn your distances over time, some people hit a 7 iron 140yards and some can hit it almost 200yards, it also has to do w/ how hard you swing your club, an average 9 iron is around 115 yards, 135yards for an 8 iron, 155 yards for a 7, 170 for a 6 and so on.. but again some people hit them more, some hit less, you'll learn over time
