My cat was killed by a coyote last Saturday. We live in a cul-de-sac in the middle of a neighborhood in Southern California. Now the neighbor on the end of the circle has pet rabbits in a cage. I think the scent of the rabbits is bringing the coyote to the cul-de-sac from afar Should I confront the friendly neighbor??? My cats love the outside for a few hours per day.. Now they must be punished to stay inside because of these rabbits.. Any answers to this problem???? Don't say keep the cats inside. I know that.. HELP!!!!

  1. I don't think it is just the rabbits personally. Any small animals will attract them. But coyotes are territorial. If they have claimed your neighborhood as theirs, then they will go where they please even if there isn't rabbits or cats. I don't think it is the animals, it is just that the coyotes are patrolling their land.

  2. Where I live in rural northeast Texas, it is legal to shoot coyotes, and we do.   Now, in california, especially urban or suburban california, I figure killing coyotes somehow offends some peoples' perception of "environmental friendliness" or somesuch nonsense.  But then, maybe it's legal to kill coyotes where you live too, but I doubt it.  Maybe you can check with your local police department about the matter and they'll be able to tell  you whether shooting coyotes in california is legal or not, and then also be able to have a talk with your neighbor for you on this matter.  Here in Texas, we take the more direct approach.

  3. I am so sorry to hear about your cat, I hope you are ok. I don't know what you can do, maybe try to speak to your neighbour and see if they respond in a possitive way, if not then speak to the council and see if they can help. Good luck and again sorry to hear about the death of your cat.

  4. awh... im sorry about your cat!!! I would definitely just let the neighbor know what is going on, and tell them your suggestion, even state it as a concern for their rabbits, which is logical.... im sure they dont want their rabbits ate either.... as long as your not confrontational, it should be fine... also, call animal control... they can set up traps around your and your neighbors house and catch the coyote and move it to a more remote location... because this could be dangerous for even a small child out at night.... good luck :)

  5. You should call the local wild life animal control and see if there is a way to relocate the coyote.  They are attracted to the distress calls of rabbits and this may be why they are comming in.  Coyotes' are opportunistic animals and will kill small animals that are vulnerable.  Best bet is to see if you can get them relocated and make sure you report the killing.  They need to be delt with before they hurt a small child that they can potentially see as prey especially if there is a lack of food source for their habitat.  Good luck

  6. Has to be more than one Coyote in the area usually they travel night time in packs of 3 or 4 or more...find out from the local authorities if you can buy a shot gun and wait  for them and eliminate each night one or 2...until you brake the pack and the remaining ones will join another pack that will be patrolling another area  away from your cats.

  7. My parents, who also live in Southern California, have a problem with coyotes. Because of that, they make it a point to bring their cats inside at night. It didn't used to be like that. They've lived in their house for over 30 years but it has only been in that past 15 years that coyotes have become so prevalent. The reason is even though their neighborhood was semi-rural when they first moved there, massive amounts of development have displaced the coyotes and brought them into their neighborhood. The only thing you can do at this point is to not leave pets outside at night and don't leave food outside either. Also, make sure your trash containers are secured so that the coyotes can't get into them. The coyotes are only after food and if they can't get it in your neighborhood, then they will move on.

  8. Tell her about the coyote I am sure she will understand
