Question:

HELP FOR DOG WITH ALLERGIES?

Every August our dog begins to itch, chew her paws and legs and get miserable. The vet prescribes things, but they don't usually work. She is pretty old and we don't want to see her so uncomfortable. Does anyone have anything that has helped your dogs?

  1. YES........Pilot does this also.  He has allergies too.  Here are the things that we did to help alleviate the situation:

    **We changed his food

**We use "Gold Bond Medicated Powder" on itchy spots and small hot spots.

**We stopped using insecticides on our grass

**We stopped giving him "chicken" ...became allergic to it. :o(

**We took out our rugs and installed wood floors.

**We nipped hot spots before they got very far....Used a soothing spray.

**We changed his dry food to a brand that works good for him.  Nutro Natural Choice.  There are a few others that work well also.

**We brush him and check him regularly for skin "issues".

All of the above are things that worked very well for us.  He now is under control for the most part and basically 90% of the time.  But, August is the time he begins to scratch, bite, and l**k.

Poor babies, huh?  There are allergie shots they can give your dog if it gets out of control.  We didn't as Pilot is doing fine, and we catch it before it progresses.  The paw l*****g is such a shame.....we still get some of that.  again, I use the Gentra Spray from our Vet, and occasionally Gold Bond.....and try to keep him from l*****g any of this.

    I wish you well.

  2. If your dog is chewing mainly on her paws and legs then it sounds to me like a contact allergy, maybe from a type of grass or plant that shows itself in august.  Watch where she goes and take note of any plant that is around that isn't normally, and then keep her away from it.  Also you could try washing her regualry with a peppermint or lavender dog shampoo, made from natural ingredients.  These are very good for soothing the skin.

  3. Sounds like allergies. My dog did the same end of August something made him so bad. After 5 vets finally a good vet said lets do allergy tests. .

I had my dog tested a for everything. He came back allergic to corn, beef, chicken, pork etc etc.Allergies to many plants and trees.  Well DUH we lived 1/8 th of a mile the way the crow flies.  When we moved a yr later as well as other neighbors are dogs all stopped with the bad allergies. The reason the nursery was full of pollen and we were so close it hit even us humans pretty hard. Once we moved we all got some what better.

So I had to make his food.

    8 lbs grd turkey cooked

10 lbs of potatoes or rice cooked up

6 cans of green beans, uncooked

2 large cans of pumpkin. uncooked.

Mix it all together, I literally used the kitchen sink to mix  and put in individual conatiners and froze. Took one out daily and un froze it and topped  it off with a 1000 mg of fish oil pill.

My vet said that was perfect.

Also d**k Van Patten has many kinds of dy dog food. I had used the venison and potaoe, less rich than the duck and potato.

  4. My dog is on California natural and salmon oil capsules and his allergies went away in a snap. If that doesn't work, have you tried a salmon based food like natural balance sweet potato and fish formula? I have never heard of a dog that was allergic to salmon.

  5. One of our dogs had allergies and we tried the prescription food z/l for a few months.  She cleared up and we slowly introduced different foods.  At the same time i was doing a lot of research and thought that she might be sensitive to grains.  I now feed our dogs on the BARF diet and they are better than ever, and no signs of any allergies ever.

I also read an interesting thing about how different breeds of dogs should eat a diet similar to what was available in the area that the breed was developed.  It makes sense for our dogs which are Brittany's - Brittany, north of france had mainly root crops as a carb source in those days.  I think it's true that different types of dogs have different nutritional requirements and like humans, it effects their immune response if they get the wrong nutrition.
