We were dealing w some very tough issues(death) in the family & my tank got a little behind on regular water chances & the water got cloudy & greenish hued.....no algea on the tank or anything just the water seemd to be like an emerald green color....anywasy I did about a 35-40% water change, & totally cleaned out the tank, scrubbed the walls, vacuumed, etc etc etc....well its been almost a week since I did this & its still super cloudy & greenish.....I bought water clarifier & have used it twice to no avail.....any tips please? The fish seem to be as happy & healthy as alwasy but the tank looks aweful PLEASE help me out....what do I need to do & Ill do it?

  1. What you have is a bloom of free floating microscopic algae in the water.

Good news is, it wont harm your fish.

    Bad news, it looks ugly.

Algae needs two things to grow, light and nutrients.

So to control it cut down the amount of light your tank is getting. Run the tank lights less or shade it from any windows. And keep up the water changes to reduce the level of nutrients (nitrate) in the water.

Be carefull with algae killing solutions, sometimes the cure is worse than the problem.

But reducing the light will help your problem.

  2. check your nitrate, and nitrite levels. your tank could be cycling . if your levels are high keep doing water changes everyday til levels are normal.don't wash the whole tank again though your losing good bacteria.

  3. Probably getting too much light, either from your light or from indirect sunlight.  Keep the light off for 4-5 days and feed your fish minimal-no food.  Should clear up fast that way.

  4. Did you cycle your tank? This cloudiness can be the cycling process is done. Did you add any medications to the tank? Some meds. May change the color of the water like malchinite green.cut down on the lighting if it helps and do a water test to see if your ammonnia and nitrite levels spiked. Also you can use Easybalance by Tetra it can help clear up the cloudiness kinda. Goodluck!!!

  5. Recently, something similar happened in my cherry shrimp tank.  I have a lot of red rams horn snails in this tank so I fed them a whole carrot and slices of zucchini and soon the tank was cloudy and greenish from an infusoria bloom.  The shrimp and snails were fine, but the oxygen level was very low and my mystery snails started climbing out of the tank.  When I put a large airstone in this tank it started to clear up and in a few days it was crystal clear and the snails stopped running away.  I feed smaller amounts of veggies now.
