My friend and I are going on vacation in a few weeks and we are bringing our kids. She has a 11 month old and i have a 14 month old.

We will be traveling in one small-ish car for 6 hours, we plan on leaving at around 3-4 in the morning (can't leave earlier due to fog and deer)

We will be at our rustic cabin (very few luxeries) for a week

anything we buy in town will be expencive and we are both on a small budget

what should we bring for the car ride, and for the week long vacation?

  1. The best thing to bring with in the car is interesting activity toys...something that they wont grow bored of in just a few minutes.  It's good that you're leaving early because the kids should sleep for the majority of the trip.  I have a portable DVD player and let my kids watch a video every now and then in the car on the longer drives.  It's not something I want them to depend on, but it's nice to have them quiet and entertained.

  2. Well you'll want to bring snacks for in the car, even meals maybe.  Sandwiches are always good for on the go, especially pb&j.    You know what your kids will eat, so just bring something that won't make a mess in the car.  As for entertaining the children, they should sleep for a lot of the trip so that will be good.  You might sing with them in the car.  That's always fun.  Or show them some pictures or read to them while someone else is driving.  For the week long vacation...  My husband and I went to a cabin for a week back in november and we just brought lots of canned food.  You can bring like tuna helpers and canned tuna.  Just one tuna helper and one can of tuna is like 2.00 altogether, so that's a very cheap meal.  Canned veggies, canned fruits, boxes of cereal or oatmeal.  Some bread would be good to bring of course.  All of this stuff is super cheap anyway.  Then when you get there just pick up a few items that won't keep well in the long car ride such as milk, eggs, hot dogs (ya gotta have hot dogs in a cabin!)  Don't forget the stuff for s'mores!!!  Have loads of fun!!!  I'm sure the kids will love it!
