I am so lost and confused on what to do! My husband is new and he is at his MOS school in 29 Palms and he just got news where he will be stationed at .... its 29 palms. Of course I was upset haha because he told me people that picked no preference got Hawaii.... why did he tell me that *mopes* Oh wells. So now I have NO CLUE on how we are going to move.

I heard there are military movers ? I do not know how that works.

If I dont get military movers I get a uhaul will they reimburst my money for the move ? That includes gas and the rental right?

Where do we go when we get there while we wait for a house ?

Anyone have any clue how long is the housing wait?

Is it even worth moving into the housing on base there? I heard some bases have some bad houses! I never lived on my Marine base only AF. They seemed fine to me.

Is it better to live on or off base? I found a nice place but its $300 over our BAH.All utilities included.

Please help me with any tips or something I might need to know!

  1. I hope you have a/c... i visited my uncle there it was was over100 that day and in the 90s that night...

  2. Your husband needs to put in the paperwork for the military movers.

  3. First of all relax.  There are a couple of ways to get this done.  Yes, the military will move you, and yes you can do it yourself.  If your husband has just recieved his orders for 29 Palms ask him to send you a copy.  He will need to go through his class instructors and ask to set up an appointment with the Traffic Management Office (TMO) to schedule your move.  He needs to get this done soon so that you have your house hold goods when you get there.  He will need to show up with seven copies of his orders and go to the briefings.  Based on his rank, you will be given a weight limit, 4,000 lbs, for total house hold goods.  But there is more to it.  He will get this at the briefing.  If he is unable to attend a briefing and you are near a military base you can contact thier TMO office for assistance with your move.  You can attend the briefing, and I think that you can set up the move.  You will need a copy of showing that the Marine Corps has authorized him to move you to his duty location.  You can do it yourself, Dity move, but it can be stressful and a true pain in the but.  But yes, if you choose to do it yourself you will be reimbursed.  After you/he attends the mandatory brief you can make the choice.  The military will contract the movers, set up an appointment with you to get a weight estimate prior to the pick up date.  On pick up day they will come to your home, pack everything up, load it on the truck, and hual it to 29 for you.  Keep all paper work, and ensure that all serial numbers for electronics on the inventory sheet.

As for housing.  He needs to go to the base housing office with a copy of his orders to get put on the waiting list.  They will let him know how long the wait is.  But the sooner that he gets on the list, the sooner that you get a house.  Yes, base housing in the past was pretty bad.  But it imporving and 29 has built a lot of new housing.  When he goes to the housing office, he can get a list of local renters that may be more in your price range.  And if you trust him enough to get a place and start to set it up before you get there, that might be in your advantage.  Waits for housing at each base are different.

Good luck, and do some internet seraches on the area.  I think that they have a military spouses network somewhere out there on the web.

    Good luck!

  4. first and foremost, let me extend my deepest sympathy for you and your husbands duty station.

as a former 29 palms Marine i can tell you it is not nearly the place that i would like to spend 4 more years at.

there is a bright side though.

if your husband is a fisherman there is plenty of tasty Brown Trout to be had in the ponds at the front of the base.
