I just got a Sony DCR-SR42, and I downloaded the special program to get the videos on to my computer, and I can watch the videos with that program, but Windows MEdia Player doesn't reconize it. If Windows Media Player cant reconize it, I ca't use Windows Movie Maker on the videos. I think the files are a MPEG-2 format. Can anybody help?!

  1. Had the same problem with my Sony. Had to get another program to edit the movies. There are a few free ones at download.com i will admit they are not the best. any decent video editing software will run $60 to $100

  2. You can check what file format your video files are and what your computer is currently trying to use to open them by clicking on the Views button in the Folder window and choosing Details.

If it is MPEG-2, you'll most likely have to use some conversion software to convert your files to an AVI using a different codec. Google "mpeg-2 to avi" should get you some conversion software.

Next time, change the recording settings on your camcorder to record AVI's using a different codec (divx, xvid, MPEG-4, etc)
