I'm writing a serial of stories about a homebirth midwife named Caroline. When Caroline was 16 years old in 1916, she got pregnant because she was raped by her uncle. Their parents didn't believe her testimony and she was sent to New Orleans to be with her grandma and gave birth to her child. Caroline gave birth to a boy named Philip in the same house that she was born and this birth was attended by a black midwife. I NEED A NAME FOR THE BLACK MIDWIFE, please. Could you HELP me?

Thank you very much!!!

    1      Mary

    2      Anna

  12. How about:

    Helen

    Frances

    Margaret

I got these off http://genealogy.about.com/library/blbab... , but I don't know if there were different names forblack babies.

The whole list from there is:

      1.  Mary

      2. Helen

      3. Margaret

      4. Dorothy

      5. Ruth

      6. Mildred

      7. Anna

      8. Frances

      9. Elizabeth

    10. Marie

  13. From that time period and region... I would think that Nellie, Effie, Bessie, Mattie, or Sallie would be appropriate names.  Since my favorite hobby is genealogy, I perused the 1920 Louisiana census records for some ideas, and most of the names from that time period ended in "ie" regardless of race... so... I personally like Nellie or Effie the best.  Good luck.

Edit:  I just finished looking through a few more census records pertaining to black families in Louisiana in 1910, and I found that Nellie, Ida, Cora, and Eula were very popular names.  Also, the last names of Minick, Brown, and Guidry seemed to be quite common.

  14. There were definitely different names for black women than white women. You could try Hattie Mae, (Oprah's grandmother's name)  or go to the library and look up some older books (like Uncle Toms Cabin, or the Color Purple) which would feature names from past time periods... it was also common for black women to have a nickname that became their only used name- like "Truthie."

  15. Ms. Boudreaux, Ms. Brown, Ms. Thibodeaux, Ms. Babineaux, Ms. Jones, Ms. Godeaux

I'm from la. these are some common last names

    Ms. Thibeaux

  16. i like the story.

a couple of names i think would fit this period of times would be:

    -Jackie

    -Lela

    -Ebony

    -Edwina

    -Belle

and i got this from the site and in the fifth paragraph, it was talking about some common names :)

    i hope this helps you.

  17. The Name should go with the Role if shes a comforting character it should be pleasant like Bella but if shes mean and ugly it should be harsh sounding like Hulga

  18. Carolyn or Deliah.
