I have a file titled Baron Log on my desk top. I was going though excell and opened a folder. In the folder there was a file ALSO called Baron Log. I didn't want to delete it b/c i assumed that was the master file and by deleting that i would then be deleting my short cut on my desk top. So what i did was dragged the file onto my desk top. I think something showed up saying "there already is a file named Baron log in on your desktop, do you want to proceed?" i clicked yes thinking i would then have TWO files with the same name, I may have had a trigger finger and didn't read thoroughly what the pop up said. Now i believe what is said that on top of the being the same name, i would be replacing this file for the one i currently have on my desk top!!! So now i'm stuck with old information that i don't need and i have no current information that my file has b/c it was replaced. PLEASE tell me there is something I could do! c'mon this is a perfect brain teaser for you COMPUTER geniuses!

  1. If your running Windows XP or Vista then you should take advantage of System restore.  Under Start/All Programs/Accessorys/System Tools/System Restore.  Go back to a restore point that is earlier than when you replaced your file.

    Good luck.

  2. try pressing Ctrl+Z

  3. Maybe you could try TuneUp Utilites, it has a "Un-delete" feature but it doesn't work very well on files that were replaced.

I'm very sorry for your lost.

Other options are looking for a file recovery program, doing a System Restore.

In the future, please read every pop-up carefully, especially when they are from Windows!

  4. brain teaser? LOL! anyway, install "recuva" a great free program to recover deleted files

  5. Have you tried checking your Recent documents folder?Open the start menu and check that first. Check your recycling bin next to see if its in there. If as a last resort, you can restore the machine to a earlier date and that will restore the folder, but depending on the dates you have set as restore points, it could do more damage than loosing that one file.
