Question

a cellular telphone company has 2 plans. plan a charges 11 dollars a month and 21 cents per minute. Then plan b charges 20 dolars a month and 10 cents per minute after how much time to the nearest minute will the cost of plan a be equal to the cost of plan b ?

CHOICES

1) 1 hour 22 min

2) 1 hour 36 min

3) 81 hour 8 min

4) 81 hour 48 min

1=82 minutes

2=96 minutes

3=4868 minutes

4=4908 minutes

(so do the math then add the monthly fee)****

81 hrs equals 60 minutes times 81= 4,860 minutes.

Now add the remainder of minutes (8)=4,868

And 4,860+48= 4908. Got it!

.21 cents a min times 82 minutes=$17.22 (add $11) =$28.22

Subtract$28.20 from $28.22

and the difference is $.02.

Subtract $29.60 from $31.16

Do you see how I came to add the monthly fee AFTER I figured out what the minute differences were?

The word "nearest"  means the least different when subtracting...so answer #1 is your choice for least difference"

1 hour and 20 minutes. there is no easy way to tell you how I got the answer but my husband the math wiz figured it out.

So, we can state it as: 11 + 0.21 x

Plan B)

Fix charge of 20

Minute charge of 0.10

state is as: 20 + 0.10 x

Equate both expressions

11 + 0.21x = 20 + 0.10x

0.11x = 9

x = 9/0.11 = 81.81

It will take 82 minutes to make both plans equal, therefore

1 hour and 22 minutes.

Wouldn't it be answer 2 because if you multiply 96 minutes by 21 cents you come up with $20.16

I'm just guessing.
