  1. Could be a corrupted master boot record -- how to repair it :

Boot from the windows XP CD, press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the restoration console. Select your windows XP installation from the list, and enter the administrator password.

Enter the command: "FIXMBR" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes). Use exit to restore the computer.

you may also try a repair install.

This will leave your info intact only replacing the windows files as needed.  Note some users have encountered errors after running a repair install. This is a conflict with some installed software not windows itself.

If your able to then gain access to your install I suggest backing up immediately to another drive ( just to make sure it is not a failing HD)

  2. please mail me all the symptoms like when did it start and did you install any new hardware or software on the computer, was there a power surge in your area.

    or contact me on: http://groups.google.co.in/group/compute...

i might be able to help you in a better manner , other wise please list the things I asked.

  3. you may have the virus thats going round appears to come from microsoft virus update(but dosn't) most antivirus wont help you may need to take it to a shop.

be aware the shop said this virus is a bad one known to kill machines(mother board damaged beyond repair) if this is what you have best bet turn off soonest and take in
