  1. Sounds to me like an ingrown toenail.  If you let it go it will only get more painful and more inflamed and will get infected.  Not something you want to deal with.  It sounds to be in the beginning stage where you can do something about it yourself.  I hope so.  So what to do?  First get a tiny bit of cotton ball. About the size of a quarter of a pencil eraser.  Now lift up the toenail and I know that is not going to be comfortable, and put that cotton under the toenail.  Put a band aid on there to keep it in place.  Keep it there 24 hours a day for as long as it still hurts.  Change it daily.  The next thing is to trim your toenails straight across, not curved.  When  you have it straight across, cut a "V" in the top in the middle of it.  This will cause the nail to grow towards the "V" and close it up, taking the nail away from the edge where it is causing trouble.  This should take care of it.  If it perchance doesn't within two weeks, go see a doctor or podiatrist.  It will have to be removed.  How do I know all this?  Simple.  I have had three of them removed.  Then another doctor told me how to treat them.  I also saw them treated this way when I was a nurse.  I hope this helps you.  I know it hurts.  You need to buy shoes with enough room in the toe box so this will not happen anymore.

  2. If it is red or "angry" looking it might be an ingrown nail. If you wear tight or pointy-toed shoes, or have recently cut your nail too deeply that could cause it. Can become infected and swollen. Try a warm foot soak and some loose footwear. That won't get rid of the ingrown but it will give some relief. A doctor would be able to tell you if you have one and how to treat it. Sometimes they are cut out, a out patient procedure.

  3. If you do any type of sport, you may have caused some minor trauma. That happened to me and my toenail fell off. DONT WORRY! i know it sounds gross, but it means you should probably get new shoes so your toes are getting crushed.

  4. You may have an in grown toe nail. See your doctor.
