HELP!! Maggots! What do I do?

I live in an area where we have to have wheelie bins. We have our black rubbish bin emptied every 2 weeks. Its usually very smelly as you can expect - so I bleach it with boiling water and next bleach once the binmen have been an before any new rubbish goes back in.

Over the last few weeks my cat had a litter of kittens so I have been emptying their litter tray every day and putting it in the black bin. As with any waste we have in our home I tie it up tightly in a carrier bag. I have just noticed that I have hundreds of maggots crawling all over the top of the bin (which is in my back yard), down the sides and a small patch forming by my wall outside (on the opposite side of the garden to where my bin is)

What do I do? I have tried boiling water and salt. Im scared to wake up in the morning and have an infestation out there! Help!

  1. Lime.

  2. you too! we've had the same problem. the flys are taking over! we just suck em' up w/ the vacuum

  3. urinate on them and eat them afterwards!

  4. Maggots come from flies. And flies are attracted to rotting food. Put bleach in a spray bottle and spray those suckers. Make sure your trash can isn't in the sun a lot cause the waste will rot quicker in the heat and cause more flies to eat and deposit their eggs which turn into maggots. Ack.

  5. i think the best solution is to move especially if the place is pretty old, you will have more problems than that if it is.

  6. If you're patient, they will become flies and die in a day or two.  They are a good source of protein if you're hungry and if you have an infection they can help to clean it up.

  7. I'm sorry I'm no entomologist but until one appears ... despite your scrupulous efforts in scrubbing and cleaning it sounds like there's still a source (or more) of decomposing flesh (animal) where those maggots are breeding.  Given they're now reproducing in more than one location, is it possible your cat has deposited "gift" birds or other prey it's caught somewhere near the the wall or bins?

Obviously, it's not for lack of cleanliness that you're still plagued by this problem (ugh/you have my sympathy!!); please forage round for sources where they must be breeding.  Best of luck to you.

  8. maggots are just baby flies    take a bug bomb and pit it in it will work
