HELP!!! My A/C still isn't working. Am I being taken advantage of because I'm a woman?

I've asked a simular question but only got one answer. I have been dealing with A/C problems for 2!!! months now and I'm going crazy!!!!! Several repair men have told me I have different things wrong with it, the unit will make a loud thud like it's about to turn on but then it cuts off. And the fan never has a chance to turn on. I need to know exactly what's wrong and also a excellent, professional repair company that I could call that will give me a full diagnoses on my unit.

Please, serious answers. I really need help.

  1. Would very much like to help you out but the information you present doesn't give much to go on.  It is a window unit?  Where do you hear the thud?  What have you been told are the problems?  The normal ac unit does not make a loud thud when it is energized.  There are two fans, one outside and one inside (assuming this is not a window unit).

Here's a web site.  Read up a bit.  That may help you get down the road a bit:

  2. Your compressor may be shot. They best thing to do, is call around to other repair shops (ones that carry the Train and or Carrier brands are the best bet) and tell them you need them to asses the exact problem as well as the cost of a replacement. While they are there, follow them around, ask questions about their reasoning of the issue, to show you what they are talking about and to give you all of your options. Have them write out all the options and possible costs involved in the repair as well as the replacement of your unit. Choose from at least three places and pick the one with the best service, warranty, and Better Business Bureau record in your county. Granted, some people will take advantage of a woman but a lot of times, they will take advantage of a man as well given the fact that he/she has proven inattentive and unknowledgeable of the situation. Knowledge is power in every aspect of life and arming yourself as best you can is the best bet.

  3. There are a couple of problems that it could be.

    1. the compressor could be locked up and not allow the unit to run.

    2. There could be a problem in the low voltage connections.

If i were there i would be looking at the compressor but no way to really tell without putting meter on the unit...
