He lives on an island away from grocery stores, would really like to get any kind of Asian staples. Any reputable companies? Trust me, he'd really appreciate it.

  1. Shipped?  It might be better to make a trip himself.  What exactly does he need?  There are certain restrictions on importing/exporting food, so what he wants might not be legal.

I would suggest driving up to Vancouver and shopping at T&T.  This is a large Asian supermarket, mostly Chinese food, but a lot of other Asian food too.

There's one at Metrotown, there's one downtown, and a couple more out in the suburbs.

Chinatown or Richmond have a lot of Chinese specialty food shops.  You can find some pretty interesting things in Chinatown, like dried seahorses, live turtles, huge mushrooms, etc.

  2. The nearest USA island to Vancouver, BC, as I am aware, is Lummi Island, which is close enough to Ferndale WA or Bellingham WA.

In any event all towns along Interstate 5 have plenty of supermarkets selling tons of Asian staples.

But if for some unknown reason he would like to import food from BC, there is:

  3. drive to Vancouver or Richmond. There are tons of chinese grocery market in there. Or you can go to china town, they have a lot of small store that carry chinese food. There is a T&T supermarket in chinatown too.
