Question:

HELP!!!! My cat's pee is reddish brown! Should I worry? What should I do?

I just saw my cat use the litter box and it seemed as if his urine was a brownish red color. He is 15 and has diabetes, which he seems to be doing pretty well with. Otherwise he is very healthy as far as I know. Should I be worried about this? What could this possibly mean? (Please do not reccommend the vet--I already made an appointment for tomorrow.)

  1. Since your cat is diabetic I would encourage you to seek treatment now.

He could be on his way to an urethral obstruction or he could have a serious urinary tract infection like pyelonephritis.

No matter what it is treatment now is far better than treatment tomorrow. The kidneys are vulnerable in a diabetic patient so any indication of problems need to be addressed before irreversible damage is done.

You have obviously been qued to watch his litterbox habits so be sure to make sure he continues to be able to pass urine.

If he should begin to vocalize or to strain emergency care needs to be sought.

He is undoubtably in pain due to inflammation of the bladder and only a vet can alleviate that pain.

Seek treatment now before this progresses into something far more serious.

  2. This is probably a Kidney infection, good job making the appt. some people are not that smart.

  3. Glad that you've already made the vet appointment.  It sounds like your cat has blood in his urine.  This could mean a kidney, bladder, or urinary tract problem, and the sooner he gets meds for it the better off he'll be.

I hope you're keeping up with his glucose testing.  Diabetic cats need regular testing to be sure that his insulin dosage is correct.

    Good luck............

  4. If he is 15 and has Diabetes, he is probably having Kidney Failure. I would say that, you may have to put him to sleep. I had a cat with the same problem however; he was about 18yrs old. Not all cats are meant to live long. Discuss options with your vet. However; remember don't choose medicine and extra care if you feel he may be suffering and the fact he only has about a few years left. I wish you all the best!

  5. You have done the right thing by taking him to the vet. Being an older cat and with diabetes, he should have a vet check him. Blood in the urine is never a good thing. Let us know how he is when you bring him home, Good Luck with poor kitty.

  6. the reddish brown stuff might be blood just see what the vet says tomorrow

  7. I had a cat once that got kidney stone blockage and required emergency treatment at the vet's office.  Before that he had bloody/brownish urine.  He had to be on a special diet and was doing fine afterward with no further blood in urine.  It is great you are seeing a vet.

  8. Your cat needs to go to the vet NOW!!!!  Don't wait, it could be a number of UTI or crystals.  My cat got this and it's painful and deadly like with 24-48 if not sooner.  My cat didn't last 8 hours.

  9. Sounds like a kidney infection to me.  I hope everything goes well.

  10. Urine should be a translucent pale yellow color and not reddish brown!!!!!  , has your cat appears to have urine which is reddish brown, then the vet appointment will need to be kept tomorrow.  A urinary tract infection, bladder infection, kidney infection, and the like will also cause your cat to pee in inappropriate places.

  11. take him to the vet

    my cat had that

they will give you some food medicine he should eat everyday
