ok, I am a first time lovebird owner, I am very excited to get one soon. I have read tons on them from this website but I have a few more questions to ask. what do you do if there are no breeders in your area? but you really want a handfed lovebird. I really want a friendly social bird who doesn't bite and is not afriad or shy. but I am pretty sure I have no choice but to get one a pet-co. how much do love birds usually cost? I read anywhere from 30-400. why would the price go from 30 all the way to 400? this is my first bird (well since I was four when I had tiny parakeet) do you think a lovebird is a good choice? thanks so much to anyone that answers!!!!!

  1. I'm not going to be much help, but i share your excitement. I just bought one (well half technically), it's still to young to bring home so it's at the store still but I can go visit as much as I want.

look for exotic pet shops in your area. they might be able to help you. or see if theres a bird show and you'll find breeders there. and it wouldnt hurt to check near by shelters to see if they happen to have an unwanted bird.

my lovebird cost $80, i paid a $40 down payment and i pay the other half when i bring it home.

the prices change depending on handraised to nonhandraised. breeding birds. colors. stuff like that.

idk about the good choice part, i haven't brought mine home yet. But I had a parakeet before that i handraised. But i think youll do fine considering youve read alot about them and everything.

  2. Where are you?  I have 3 handfed and weaned baby lovebirds ready to go to a new home.  I sell them for $75 each.  Cheap birds are often not handfed or tame - so little has been put into them.  $400 must be for a very rare mutation.

I think a lovebird is a great choice. Email me off YA.

  3. I would suggest you join a Yahoo Group that is dedicated to lovebirds where you'll be able to ask lots of questions and probably meet lots of breeders.  Really doing  your homework now (as you are doing) and making the effort to find a breeder who hand feeds and socializes the babies will pay off in the long run.  You might also consider another budgie or a cockatiel (but you should make an effort to find a breeder with those birds as well :-)
