RS= 7a

ST = 12a

RS = 28

if S is between R and T, that means that RS + ST = RT

(the longer line segment is the sum of its two parts)

Is there a typo in your problem? or is RS really both 7a and 28?

I solved below assuming that RT = 28 (see the end if RS = 7a = 28)

7a + 12a = 28

19a = 28

a = 28/19

ST = 12a = 12(28/19) = 336 / 19

if RS =7a = 28, then a = 4

RS = 28

ST = 48

RT = RS + ST = 28 + 48 = 76

This seems a more likely problem...
