I'm 23 weeks with our first child! We're a pretty young couple, 21&23, and even though we have read every book ever published, I'm still scared to death! She was a planned baby, but we didn't plan to start trying for another 5 months. So for 5 months while he graduates we're going to be on a tough budget. I've been put on bed rest, and I'm going crazy doing nothing. I want to get her room ready and make sure we have everything we need shampoo, crib sheets, any medications she will need, etc. I also plan to breast feed! If you could compile a list of things you bought ahead of time, or your favorite brands...ANY help would be SO greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

  1. Step 1- Deep breath.

Step 2- Find stuff you need for the baby on Craigslist. EXCELLENT resource, especially for people on a budget. Oh make sure you have a working digital camera. You can never have too many pictures of your angel.

Step 3- Sleep. Sleep now! Sleeeeeeeeep. For the love of god, sleep while you don't have a tiny person depending on you every second! :)

Step 4- Take a baby moon! (google it)

  2. Ok I have two kids and one of them is only 7 months old so here is my list of newborn must have's:

Diapers (Pampers Swaddlers where my favorite)

Boppy Pillow (for when you breastfeed)

Shampoo and Baby Wash (Johnson & Johnson's Bedtime)

    Washcloths

    Burp Cloths

    Socks and Hats

    Blankets

    Layettes and Onesies

    Wipes

I don't think you would need medication just yet...newborns can't even take stuff like Tylenol or Motrim anyways.

    Nursing Pads and Nursing Bra

    Lansonil Ointment

Basinett worked better for me until my son was about 4 months old and too big for it...I liked the fact he was close to me at night. But if you breastfeed you may want to try co-sleeping which will make nursing at night easier.

That's all I can think of now....don't worry newborns only need the basics at least for the first couple of weeks...worry about the rest when it is time.

  3. all you really need to buy is the crib, changing table and dresser.  Hopefully everyone else will get you stuff at your baby shower.  I swear by Burt's Bee's Baby care stuff, it is the most organic stuff out there.  The johnson and johnson stuff has nasty evil chemicals.  If you are going to breastfeed you NEED the "breastfriend"  it is a back support/ shelf that you wear to help you breastfeed. And don't worry if the baby doesn't latch on right away...you guys need to figure each other out. Buy a electric breast pump, so later daddy can feed if you need to go out for longer than 2-4 hours....and that wont happen for awhile missy!!!

and if people ask you what you need....Girl you need DIAPERS...lots and lots of diapers!

  4. put those books you read to use and take a pen and paper and start taking notes. They all have good stuff in them. just prepare for the baby's first week unless you plan on having a baby shower I would at least make sure you are ready for the babys first week. don't forget a bath and the litle cushion that goes inside it!! you will need that!!

stick with the trusted brands like johnson and johnson bath stuff and gerber white tshirts.

  5. Crib

    crib bumper

    recieving blankets

    mobile

    changing table

    diaper stacker

    lotion

    baby wash

    shampoo

    wash cloths

    baby bath tub

    Dreft (baby laundry detergent)

    socks

    shoes

    comb/brush

    burp cloths

    bibs

    baby book

    camera

    breastmilk storage bags

breast pads--i found lansinoh brand to be the best

    bottles

    pacifiers

    diaper bag

portable wipe container for diaper bag

can't think of anything else right now! lol My husband and I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and we're 21 and 23 too! Congrats and don't worry, set your budget and stick to it and you'll be just fine.
