Question:

HELP!! Problem with my Arius Seemani (Arius Jordani)

I have a 10 inch Arius Seemani (Silver Finned Shark) and before today, he has been a great part of my aquarium. However, today, I noticed that he has two extra growths in his bottom back fins (1 on each side).

It almost looks like the fins have split down the middle, but the top two are about half an inch smaller than the bottom ones. Plus, the fins are more of a whitish color, unlike my other sharks (same species) that have the usual black fins.

Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions on what to do/what this is?

  1. The description is very vague... Pictures would be very helpful.  The obvious explanation would be fin rot, though it could also be from aggression.  I would isolate said Catfish and begin treating with a half dose of any of the gram negative effective medications (Triple Sulfa, Trisulfa, Furan 2, Maracyn TC, TC Capsules, Maracyn 2, Kanaplex, Terramycin, etc.).  Be sure to remove any activated carbon from the filter during treatment, and if using tetracycline or minocycline, keep the tank dark, as these drugs degrade with exposure to light.
