Question:

HELP! Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections!?

My mother has been having the symptoms for urinary tract infection repeatedly for the last five years. She goes to the emergency room a lot and doctors just give her a medicine to urinary tract infection. But I don't know if the medicines work because she gets urinary tract infections every month. When she gets them she feels severe burning down there and she has to urinate frequently although very little urine comes out and often she feels like urine will come out but it doesn't. My mom is 34 yrs old. Doctors don't seem to understand what's going on with her. They keep giving her the same antibiotics and overlook the fact that she has been going through this for five years. Is there anyone else who has this sort of thing? And what can she do to get rid of this condition?

  1. sounds like she needs to see a doctor just for this problem

    maybe a narrowing or stones

    could be many things

    however drinking alot of water should help

  2. First of all - she needs to stop going to the emergency room -- she needs to see a doctor that can provide continuous care over the course of multiple UTIs.  The ER docs are providing immediate care AND I am sure are telling her to follow up with a primary care doctor.  But the ER's job is just to treat - not to determine why.

    There are lots of reasons for recurrent UTIs - but she needs an ultrasound and a pelvic exam to start with to determine why.

  3. i'm 32 i went through the same for like a year and the doctor keep prescribing antibiotics and would always say 'here just take this and you'll be fine' i would have to go monthly because i had bad pain so what i did  was i went to the doctor and she prescribed more antibiotic   i started to drink alot of water and start taking cranberry gel caplets that  i bought at the store and as soon as  i finished the antibiotic i went for a follow up with my doctor and i still had a little bit of the infection left she prescribed more antibiotic as soon as i finished those i went back and the infection was gone i still drink plenty of water and still take the cranberry pills  the infeccion hasn't came back {very important when a women goes to the bathroom always wipe front to back}

  4. She needs to go to a urologist.

  5. Contact a urologist it sounds like it could be a bladder condition on top of an urinary tract infection.  But I'm no specialist.  Get her to ask her doctor for a referral to a urologist, no matter how stubborn she might get, just remind her that the specialist may stop her pain and she won't be going into the emergency room as often.

    Also it could help slightly if she adds cranberries to her diet.  You can get them in supplement form, juices, canned, or those craisins that are out.  They are very good at helping with the occasional urinary tract infection, but maybe they can alleviate some of your mother's problem.
