HELP!! Refractive Index... organic chem?

i would just like to know if impurities in a compound would increase or decreases the refractive index and why?

as refractive index is a ratio between velocity of light in a given medium to the velocity of light in vacuum as the amount of particle increase by increasing impurities then speed of light in given medium decrease so refractive index also decrease.
